On my third whale swimming trip, I visited the middle group of islands in the Kingdom Of Tonga: the Ha’apai group.

I will always be grateful for ethical opportunities to swim with humpback whales. These encounters were entirely on the whales terms. Most of these images are from one encounter. We had a very curious juvenile female humpack whale swim with us one afternoon. She danced in the water, looked us in the eye, and swum under and around the boat. We were treated to fin slaps, tail flips, twirls and spyhops.

As always, I’ll treasure these moments.
