CANVAS is a series exploring identity and how the use of facades, makeup and fashion disguise and shape our identities. By using food, the audience is challenged with an unusual depiction of a human being. The human face, of which we see daily, becomes obscured. The subjects are almost anonymous.
With the idea that the face is a canvas, this series of work depicts how each varying food substance on the face creates texture, colour, and shape. While the subjects are unknown, we focus more on the substance and the impression that is made by it, rather than the individual themselves. It allows the audience to question: how much does the appearance we choose for ourselves influence others’ perception of us?
