Peace And Fear

2017
10” x 12” Inkjet waterproof print displayed underwater

In the conceptualisation behind this artwork, I contradict my feelings of connection to the underwater world by photographing someone who feels disconnected. Growing up, the subject spent summers across from a violent surf beach. To me the ocean is home but to him it is fear. I merge subject and background with patterns from the water’s surface to create an affinity between human and the underwater experience to fabricate a visual representation of peace despite his tangible fear. With so little contrast visually between figure and ground we find juxtaposition in the conceptualisation behind this image. To see the calm image, the audience must look through a disturbed water surface to provoke the same agitation between subject and viewer.
